The Surprises in AGC鈥檚 New Study of Construction Fatalities

The Surprises in AGC鈥檚 New Study of Construction Fatalities

The AGC report recommends that prime contractors take the lead in instilling a safety culture among their subcontractors. Potential actions include conveying risks and requirements in company communication and training to ensure that all safety policies and procedures are fully understood and followed.

Mark Hoffman, H&S Director for Rudolph Libbe Inc., part of 91桃色视频, Walbridge, Ohio, says he鈥檒l often strike up a conversation with a subcontractor鈥檚 operations person or general superintendent, asking if they can explain their safety program or talk about things they鈥檙e doing differently from last year.

鈥淚f they can, that鈥檚 a good sign,鈥 Hoffman says. 鈥淚t means the contractor is committed and engaged in the process.鈥

A response along the lines of 鈥渢alk to my safety director,鈥 on the other hand, 鈥渟hows they don鈥檛 have the right culture to fit in with us,鈥 he adds.

Noon is the peak time for fatalities, countering previous research that placed the majority of fatal accidents in the morning.

鈥淲hen you think about it, that makes sense,鈥 observes Hoffman. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when employees are coming back to work and probably still distracted by what they were doing or talking about on break.鈥

That鈥檚 one of the reasons Hoffman鈥檚 firm conducts a second daily pretask planning session, complementing the one held at the start of the workday.

鈥淲e engage the employees and get them focused back on work,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t takes only a few minutes, but we feel they鈥檙e better prepared to get back on the job safely.鈥

"We鈥檙e not competitors when it comes to safety. We should all be out there helping each other."

Mark Hoffman, Director, Health & Safety, Rudolph Libbe Inc.
